Management of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is a complex endocrine disorder affecting 1 in 10 women. It is characterized by irregular cycles, high androgen (male hormone) levels, and “polycystic” appearing ovaries on an ultrasound.
The Management Strategy
Management is symptom-oriented:
For Irregular Periods: Combined oral contraceptive pills are used to regulate the cycle and protect the uterine lining from thickening (hyperplasia).
For Insulin Resistance: Metformin is often prescribed to help the body process sugar more effectively, which also helps in weight management.
For Hirsutism (Excess Hair): Anti-androgen medications and laser hair removal.
Fertility: PCOS is a leading cause of infertility, but it is highly treatable with ovulation-inducing medications.
